What Does God Want?
Men On Target
In Session 3 of the Men on Target series, titled "What Does He Want?", we explore God’s core desire for us as men. Building on our previous discussion about who God is, this session focuses on what He truly asks of us, distilled into a single, powerful truth.
The Heart of God’s Desire
God’s will for us is encapsulated in the Great Commandment, as shared by Jesus:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew 22:37-39 (NKJV)
These commandments—loving God fully and loving others as ourselves—form the foundation of God’s expectations. Everything in Scripture hinges on these principles.
Reconciliation Through Jesus
I once spoke at a vibrant African-American church, where I shared a message about racial reconciliation. Despite numerous laws and discussions, true unity remains elusive. Why? Because God’s way transforms the heart from the inside out, while human efforts rely on external rules. I asked the congregation to think of someone deeply in love with Jesus and whether that person could harbor prejudice. No hands were raised—a testament to the truth that reconciliation with Jesus enables us to see others as He does: as infinitely precious.
“An invisible God is made visible through the actions,
not just words,
of those who fellowship with His Son, Jesus.”
Pursuing the True God
To live out God’s love, we must pursue the God who is, not a version we create. At OTM.co, you can download a list of 20 signs that you may be chasing a false God. Here are a few:
Prayer fades from your daily life.
You focus only on temporal matters, ignoring eternity.
Sin is justified without stirring your conscience.
You’re unmoved by disrespect toward God’s name.
You consume harmful media, like pornography, without conviction.
These signs prompt self-reflection. Are we seeking God’s truth or excusing our shortcomings? Scripture offers a promise:
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
James 4:8 (NKJV)
Life Implication
If we’re not passionately in love with God, our view of others will be skewed. Pursuing a false God leads to spiritual callousness. To grow, reflect on the 20 signs and take practical steps to align with the God who is.
